Obituary

Elva Sue Bagley, loving wife of Roger Bagley and mother of five children, passed away on Sunday, June 12 following a stroke. She was 78 years old. Sue, as she was known to family and friends, was born on May 28, 1944 in West Virginia to Kenny and Agnes Roe. She and her older brother, Bill, spent much of their childhood in Kentucky with their maternal grandmother. Sue’s mother later married Charles Benedict and subsequently added two younger sisters, Jenny and Nancy, to the family. As a young woman, Sue moved to Madison, Wisconsin where she met her future husband. Soon after they met, Roger, who was divorced, introduced her to his four young children. Undaunted by the prospect of raising four children, Sue married Roger on October 15, 1966. They were married for 55 years. Sue became an instant mother and embraced that role for the rest of her life. The couple brought one more child, Randy, into the family the following year. His birth was joyfully received by his parents and his many siblings. The large family enjoyed camping during the summer and snowmobiling in the winter along with all the regular activities of a large family. As the children grew older, Sue and Roger enjoyed motorcycle trips and outings with their camping club. Sue continued to pursue her lifelong love of crocheting. She also learned to quilt in later years. Her children fondly called their mother the “Queen of Yahtzee” as she was always up for a game. Whenever anyone wanted some time with Mom, all they had to do was suggest any board game and she would find time to play. But she was hard to beat at Yahtzee! In 1981 when the four older children had left home, Sue, Roger, and Randy moved to Longview, Texas to escape the cold Michigan winters and look for new business opportunities. In addition to careers as a bookkeeper, hairdresser, and a companion to Roger in his long-haul trucking business, Sue was a foster parent. She firmly believed she was put on earth to mother children. The couple retired to Bullard, Texas, where they lived until a recent move to Marshall to be near their son, Randy. Sue is survived by her husband Roger, her five children, Brenda (Ed), Ron (Julie), Corrine (Dan), Penny (Lennie), and Randy (Teresa), her brother Bill (Mary) and sister Nancy, as well as 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jenny. Services will be private. For additional information, visit www.meadowbrookfh.com.
