Shelly Harol Fleming, Sr. was born on November 9, 1943 in Marshall, Texas to Valton and Aletha (Barton) Fleming. He passed away on February 15, 2021 in Shreveport, LA after a brief illness. Shelly attended schools in the cities of Marshall, Pittsburg and Karnack, Texas. A devoted husband, father and “Papaw”, Shelly was a proud patriot and Viet Nam Veteran who served in the U.S. Navy and did three tours in Viet Nam during a time when service members were vilified instead of celebrated. Shelly was a member of what was referred to “Brown Water Navy” which patrolled the rivers of Viet Nam and he was present for the attack on the USS Maddox. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Shelly became a master pattern maker and co-owned Waskom Woodcraft for over thirty years. He also had a love for music and could play multiple instruments. He served as the music minister and a trustee for Baptist Temple in Waskom for 25 years. Generous, loving and selfless, Shelly could always be counted on to use one of his many talents to help anyone in need. He had an infectious laugh and a quick wit. Shelly had a love for his pets, westerns, Blue Bell ice cream and spoiling his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and always remembered. Shelly is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Peggy; his cherished son, Shelly, Jr. “Bub”; and his sister, Lizzie Sue Collins. He is survived by his daughter, Amy Fleming Gillard and her husband, Bo Gillard of Waskom; his grandchildren, Nikki King (Matt), Courtney Gillard, Zachary Gillard (Cimber), Jacob Gillard, Shellie Adams (Kyle); as well as 10 great-grandchildren, Alex, Jaxon, Cruz, Greyson, Easton, Brandon, Levi Shelly, Eden Reese, Zachary, Jr., and Kyler Beth. A memorial service will be held at Baptist Temple in Waskom, Texas on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 2:00pm. Online condolences may be offered at www.meadowbrookfh.com
