Alice Marie Butler

December 5, 1932 ~ April 18, 2021 (age 88)

"And God shall wipe all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away: Revelation 21:4

Mrs. Alice Marie Butler (Mother) was born December 5, 1932 to the late Foster Mitchell and Leaola Stephens Mitchell in Scottsville, Texas. Mrs. Butler had a strong belief in God, and at an early age accepted Christ. She was a member of several churches over her lifetime, including Mallalieu United Methodist Church, Galilee Baptist Church and New Birth Childress Deliverance Temple.

She was educated in the Marshall Public schools and graduated with the Class of 1950. She later went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Education and taught Special Education for 31 years until her retirement in 1989.

Mrs. Butler was united in marriage to the late Louis Lee Butler.

Mrs. Butler departed this life on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at her home in Marshall, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Foster and Leaola Mitchell; her sister, Willie Mae, and her daughter, Lawanda Denise Butler.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory two sons, Trenell Wayne Mitchell of Longview Texas, and Louis Bernard Butler of Marshall, Texas; two daughters,  Harriet Gaut of Houston, Texas, and Deloris Butler of Marshall, Texas; two stepchildren, Janice Kay Butler Winfield and Troy Butler, both of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Natasha Hollins, Jeremy Gaut, Joshua Walker, Calvin Londow and Malik Reed; very special friends, Ms. Johnnie Jenkins, Midge Davis, Dorothy May and Diane Webb; a host of precious great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and all of her friends in the Sunny South Community.

Mrs. Butler, affectionately known to her friends as “Ree” and to all those she came to know and love in the community as “Mother”, was an outgoing, caring and loving woman who never met a stranger, always spoke her mind and was a jokester. She had a short trial with crafting that included sewing and knitting, took swimming lessons at the age of 73, loved to sing and solve word puzzles, cook, and eat, eat, eat! One of her favorite sayings was “I have dined sufficiently”.  Mrs. Butler’s greatest joy, however, was spending time and creating memories with her cherished family.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Tedra Lewis, Angie Harris, Sherbrell Sheppard, Britnay Brown and many more from Hospice of Marshall for their loving care of Mrs. Butler.  She was well loved by all who were blessed to know her and will be truly missed by all.
