Beloved husband, cherished father, devoted grandfather, brother and friend of many, A. J. Tatum, age 87, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2020 in Marshall, Texas. A.J. was born on May 20, 1933 in Dike, Texas to Claud Ray Tatum and Rachel Elizabeth (Meadlin) Tatum. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Rachel Tatum, and his grandson, Charlie Stuart and 1great grandchild, Ashley Stuart. A.J. is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Patsy Joann (Teague) Tatum; his children, Ginger McGuire, Patricia Ann Lohman and Robert Wayne Tatum; grandchildren, Brian Easterling, Megan McGuire, Jamie Lohman (Naomi), Kelly Cason (David), Josh Tatum (Erica), Sheryl Damuth (Jimmy) and Danielle Tatum; sister, Gloria Hoopes (Burdette); nephews, Justin Hoopes (Sarah Katherine), Kevin Hoopes (Allison), and Brandon Hoopes (Hannah). 17 great-grandchildren. A.J. attended Junior High and High School in MISD and was fondly known as the “class clown”. He served as a Deacon at Second Baptist Church and worked many years for Pete Allen Exxon, who retired and sold the business to A.J & Patsy. They then moved out on Victory Drive in Marshall and ran a full service gas station that was a family affair. AJ’s Exxon/ AJ’s Diamond Shamrock was where you could get your car filled up with gas, oil changed, and some engine repairs along with the free entertainment of AJ. 1989, A.J. and his family opened the Stottford House which they successfully operated for 26 years. He was quite a character who loved to talk and laugh. AJ would cut up and clown around with anyone except on Sunday mornings on the church pew. He was a Christian man who loved his family, church, and community. He had a servants heart and was often found helping his loved ones after work. AJ loved to read the newspaper and his Bible daily.. He was truly loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed. A Visitation for A.J. will be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at Meadowbrook Funeral Home from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral Service will be at 10:00am on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Meadowbrook Funeral Home with Bro. Rocky Burrows officiating. Interment will follow at Colonial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Parrish, Larry Oglesby, Johnny Bogue, Brian Easterling, Jamie Lohman, Josh Tatum, David Cason and Jimmy Damuth.
