SOLOMON, Vernard Grimes, age 74, of Marshall, TX passed away at LSU Hospital, Shreveport, LA on September 15, 2018 from complications of injuries in a truck accident on September 5. Vernard was born November 28, 1943, in Marshall, TX, the second son of Harold E. Solomon, Sr. and Joanna Grimes Solomon. A 1962 graduate of Marshall High School, the University of Texas, Austin in 1966, and in 1969 the South Texas College of Law, Houston, Vernard became eligible to practice law in Texas on December 15, 1969. Vernard was the Criminal District Attorney for Harrison County from 1971-1975 at which time he entered private practice. In January, 1975, he was in the first class of Texas lawyers to become certified as a Specialist in Criminal Law by the "Texas Board of Legal Specialization, Criminal Law" and had maintained that rating for 43 years. If you were in trouble, you were very happy to have Vernard on your side!! He is quoted as saying: "Remember, you might think you are guilty, but they may not be able to prove it so". Selected by his peers as a "Super Lawyer" three times by Texas Monthly Magazine in an area that included Dallas to the East Texas State Line. Husband, Father, and Brother. Avid golfer (member of the Lakeside Country Club, Marshall), story teller, and duck hunter!! One of his happiest places to be was his duck blind on Caddo Lake hunting with his brother, Harold or one of many duck hunting friends. He won the Texas State Duck Calling Contest in 1979, 1992 and 1993, and in 1979 won the World Champion Duck Calling Contest, Stuttgart, Arkansas. Vernard is survived by his wife of 49 years, married April 12, 1969, Diane Ward Solomon, Marshall, TX; his daughter, Shannon Solomon, Karnack, TX and his son, Coke Ward Solomon, Criminal District Attorney of Marshall, TX.; his grandchildren, Brianna and Grant Solomon, Plano, TX; his brother, Harold Solomon, Jr. and wife, Sandra Solomon, Rockwall, TX; his nephew, Trey Solomon and wife, Kristie, Gilroy, CA; his niece, Maria Solomon, San Jose, CA; his cousins, Kay Andrews and husband, Fred, Sharon O'Neal, Toddy Solomon, and Walter Solomon and wife, Carolyn, Vernard Grimes III, Paula Jones and husband, Spencer and Marilyn Hebert. A lover of animals, Vernard also leaves Odie, Lake House kitty. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, King Solomon; his infant sister, Lori Solomon; his great-granddaughter, Kenzlie Grace Solomon; and his cousins, Wanda Parker and Joan Foster. I will always remember Vernard and his brother, King as being the 'big sister' they never wanted. Rest in Peace, Vernard. Your presence will be greatly missed!!
